Office 2007 (Back to Blogs)

Office 2007

So, after the overwhelming response on my first blog, it’s time to write again. This time the subject is software. Just recently I “acquired” Microsoft Office 2007, and I had the chance to see what all the fuss was about. Apparently, Microsoft believes if it’s going to change one product (their OS) then why not change all of them. The most apparent change I noticed right off the bat, was that the menu bars were gone, replaced by tabs or “ribbons”. That means you have to know what tab to look in to find what you want. Unfortunately, for long time Office users, the new version will take some getting used to. Why? Every feature and command has been moved around. (I couldn’t even find Save and Open for Peat’s sake). Some might argue that the new “ribbon” feature saves them time, but because only one ribbon can be displayed at a time, and a lot of time is spent remembering what is in each ribbon, I highly doubt this.

The Ribbon:

Are there any positives you ask? Well, for one, it looks a whole lot better. The price is a bit expensive depending on what version you get. So, if you’re used to the old Office, then I wouldn’t bother switching just yet.

  1. TCC will be switching over to Office 2007 during the summer (of 2007). I think all the computers will be switched over to Vista, too, so getting used to the "ribbon" view before then is probably helpful. :-) From the pucture you show of the ribbon, it looks a bit like a really expanded version of the insert toolbar in Macromedia Dreamweaver 8. Would you say that's a reasonable comparison? Is there any option to switch it to "classic" Office menus and toolbars, by any chance?

  2. Hey Scott, Actually, I just use Dreamweaver for the code view (I know, what a waste of a good program) so I couldn't tell you. It's not a very big picture of the ribbon, but basically there are 7 or so tabs, and clicking the tab will display all of the commands for that tab. Unless it's hidden, I don't think you can change it back to menus. Oddly enough, Publisher still has the menus. Maybe they ran out of time in converting this...maybe they were just too lazy... I know you use Netscape Navigator, how does the site look in that? I never got around to checking it in other browsers besides Firefox and IE.

  3. I basically use Dreamweaver for the code view, too, but you can turn on the insert toolbar even so. Sounds like this is the same sort of thing. I don't think Publisher was originally a Microsoft product (could be wrong). Maybe it just takes too much code rewriting at this time to make it match everything else. Netscape just uses either the Firefox rendering engine or the IE rendering engine. I tried viewing your site with each and it looked fine to me--probably the same as what you saw using Firefox and IE.

  4. I think it works a lot better. Makes more sense logically, and organizes the tools in a way that makes sense to an average person who's never used a computer before. If you're used to the old menus, well, get used to the new ones, lol, comes with the territory. The only downside I would say is that it's a lot bigger than the previous tool bars (at default).
